Description
Nursing Instructor
UC San Diego Extension’s Healthcare Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of nursing.  Nursing on all levels is a growing field in healthcare, and will continue to expand in the coming years.  UC San Diego Extension wants to enhance its continuing education offerings in nursing in a variety of specialties, which would include (but not be limited to) wound care, diabetes education, psychiatry, public health, post-anesthesia care, and nurse refresher skills, to name a few. In addition, we welcome topics suggested by the applicant that may not already be available to students through our portfolio.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in nursing.  Specific duties include in-class, or online, instruction to participants who are currently working in nursing positions, or who want to enter the field.  Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners.  Additional specific duties include:
  • Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
  • Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant’s qualifications would include at least 10 years clinical nursing experience, of which five (5) of those years in the specialty area the individual wants to teach, plus a minimum of a masters’ degree in nursing or a related field.  In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience.  It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of online course development and delivery.  Proficiency in current instructional technology (e.g. Powerpoint) is required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures.  UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.  Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
