The UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies’ International Programs department houses the English Language Institute (ELI) and the International Student Services Office (ISS). The ISS Office supports students across International Programs, including those enrolled in the ELI, and oversees the Cultural Ambassador Program (CAP). The purpose CAP is to give International Programs (IP) students at the ELI an opportunity to practice their English with native or highly proficient English speakers in the classroom and interact with local community members. Community Ambassadors facilitate conversation with students in ELI conversation classes and other IP-sponsored activities.
A reasonable estimate of compensation for assisting one section of this course is $200-$240. The current hourly rate for this position is $17.75 per hour to start. Instructional assignments are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to assist future sections of this course or any other courses.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Some of the primary duties of the Community Ambassador will be to facilitate small group conversations in Conversation classes. The group conversation activities are designed by the course instructor and led by the Community Ambassador with guidance from the course instructor. Other duties of the Community Ambassador will include: *Participating in Conversation Clubs and Games Cafés outside of the classroom by engaging students while sharing experiences as a community member. * Leading campus tours around the Extended Studies campus as well as the main university campus at UC San Diego * Assisting with new student orientations by guiding students around the Extended Studies campus as a Campus Tour Leader, and by engaging them in icebreaker activities as a Conversation Assistant * Chaperoning activities to destinations around San Diego and Southern California.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have excellent understanding and proficient use of the English language
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with limited-English speakers
- Must have a desire to work with a diverse international population
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The Cultural Ambassador Agreement outlines the deliverables for the assignment, the schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. Should the course section a Community Ambassador plans to assist with be cancelled for any reason, rights to compensation for future section meetings is voided.
