UC San Diego Extension’s Engineering Department seeks applicants to be instructors to teach Professional Engineering and Fundamentals of Engineering Review courses.  UC San Diego Extension offers a broad array of courses and certificate programs to meet the continuing education needs of the engineering community, support high-level skills development for industry professionals and career transition for those interested in entering the engineering field.  UC San Diego Extension wants to expand its continuing education offerings in these reviews specifically to prepare students to pass NCEES exams.  These include economics, project management, fluid statics & dynamics, solid & hazardous waste, soil mechanics & foundation, air pollution, wastewater treatment, groundwater & water supply, open channel flow, steel structure, reinforced concrete design, structural analysis, transportation, math, thermodynamics & heat transfer, fluid mechanics, chemistry/material science, ethnics, electric circuits, digital tech, mechanics of materials, dynamics, circuit theory, circuit analysis, synchronous machines, power factor correlation, lightning & surge protections, grounding & bonding, VSDs, surveying, etc.  In addition, we welcome topics suggested by the applicant that may not already be available to students through our portfolio.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in one subject matter of any review. Specific duties include in-person and online instruction to participants who are currently preparing for the NCEES exam. Instructors should be able to teach in detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners, while providing a perspective on how that knowledge is applied in the industry. Additional specific duties include:
  • Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
  • Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork;
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Masters or Ph.D. degree in subject matter related field is required. In exceptional cases an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills to engage and inspire students, and to work with others at all educational and professional levels.
  • Ability to effectively convey thoughts and concepts.
  • Uptodate knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in subject area.
  • Skilled in developing and revising course content.
  • Proficient in learning and using online teaching tools.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
