UC San Diego Extension seeks to expand its continuing education offerings in clinical trials specifically related to skills and knowledge required for employment by contract research organizations (CRO’s) and sponsors of clinical research, as well as by clinical sites. Our programs provide basics for entry-level positions for new or recent graduates in the sciences, and for those transferring from other areas and within the industry; our programs provide the knowledge needed for a change in career. We also welcome topics suggested by the applicant that may not already be available to students in our existing portfolio of clinical trials courses and programs.

Specific Duties

Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in clinical trials. Specific duties include in-class, or online, instruction to participants who are currently working in clinical trials positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to enter the field. Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners. Additional specific duties include:

  • Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
  • Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications would include at least ten (10) years’ experience in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry, including clinical trials design, administration, and/or management, plus a Masters’ degree in the sciences or a related field. Strong knowledge of FDA regulations for IND and IDE trials required. In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience. It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of online course development and delivery.  Proficiency in current instructional technology (e.g. PowerPoint) is required. Strong knowledge of FDA regulations for IND and IDE Trials required.

Special Conditions of Employment

As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by agreement". The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
