UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies Healthcare Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of healthcare. Healthcare, in general, is a growing area for all levels of professionals. Hospitals, primary care settings, and industries tangent to the field, are all growing with a continual focus on quality of care.
UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies wants to expand its continuing education offerings in healthcare specifically related to skills and knowledge in the areas of:
- Healthcare leadership
- Healthcare management
- Healthcare administration
- Healthcare information technology
- Clinical topics
- Lactation education
In addition, we welcome topics suggested by the applicant that may not already be available to students through our existing portfolio of healthcare courses and programs.
A reasonable estimate of compensation for teaching one section of this course is $1,000-$9,995. The amount determined within the compensation range is dependent upon course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future sections of this course or any other courses.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in healthcare related topics. Duties include in-class or online instruction to participants who are currently working in healthcare positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to enter the field. Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners. Additional duties include:
- Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques.
- Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations.
- Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in healthcare plus a Masters’ degree in a related field.
- Strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience.
- Proficiency in current instructional technology (e.g. PowerPoint).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of online course development and delivery.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Division of Extended Studies Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
