Description

Degree Plus is a sponsored, predominantly asynchronous online certificate and paid internship program designed for UC San Diego undergraduate students. The program provides students with opportunities to develop career-relevant, workforce-aligned skills through certificate pathways in Arts Management, Data Analysis and Visualization, and Project and Process Management, while also gaining applied professional experience through paid internships.

As part of the program, all students enroll in a required one-unit Internship and Career Development Seminar throughout the duration of their certificate studies. The seminar prepares students for successful internships and long-term career readiness through guided reflection, professional skill development, and internship preparation activities. While the seminar is primarily asynchronous, it also includes monthly in-person sessions featuring guest speakers, alumni, employers, and interactive professional development activities designed to help students connect their academic learning with career pathways and workplace expectations.

The Instructor for the Internship and Career Development Seminar facilitates a predominantly asynchronous course that prepares students for internships and long-term career success as part of the Degree Plus program at UC San Diego. The instructor develops engaging online learning materials; guides students in career readiness, professional communication, networking, and workplace preparation; provides timely feedback and student support; and coordinates monthly guest speaker and professional development sessions. The position requires strong subject matter expertise in career readiness and experiential learning, effective communication and instructional technology skills, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and professionally engaging learning environment.

A reasonable estimate of compensation for teaching one section of this course is $2,000-$6,000. The amount determined within the compensation range is dependent upon course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future sections of this course or any other courses.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Facilitate and manage a predominantly asynchronous career development course focused on internship readiness, professional skills, and career planning.
  • Design and maintain engaging online instructional materials, including interactive modules, discussion activities, reflections, and applied career assignments.
  • Integrate relevant resources from UC San Diego Career Services, Teaching + Learning Commons, and UC San Diego Student Employment into course instruction and student activities.
  • Guide students in developing career readiness skills, including resume and cover letter writing, networking, interviewing, workplace communication, professionalism, and AI in the workplace.
  • Mentor students in establishing internship learning goals and creating personalized internship and career readiness plans.
  • Facilitate student reflection on academic, certificate, and internship experiences to support career exploration and professional growth.
  • Assist with organizing and facilitating monthly in-person sessions featuring guest speakers, alumni, employers, or campus partners.
  • Assist with recruiting, coordinating, and communicating with guest speakers to ensure alignment with course learning outcomes and student needs.
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive, and professionally engaging learning environment that encourages active student participation.
  • Provide timely, constructive, and substantive feedback on assignments, discussions, reflections, and career preparation materials.
  • Maintain regular, responsive communication with students and demonstrate availability to support student success throughout the course.
  • Monitor student engagement and progress and proactively address concerns related to participation, attendance, or assignment completion.
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise in career readiness, experiential learning, internship preparation, and workforce development.
  • Utilize instructional technologies and digital learning tools effectively to create organized, accessible, and interactive learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with program leadership on course improvement, curriculum alignment, instructor onboarding, and program-related initiatives as requested.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in education, career development, counseling, higher education, business, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in career readiness, workforce development, internship preparation, experiential learning, student advising, or related programming.
  • Experience teaching, facilitating, or developing instruction in online or hybrid learning environments, including asynchronous instruction.
  • Ability to create engaging and interactive instructional materials and provide timely, student-centered communication and feedback.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and instructional technology skills, with the ability to support diverse student populations effectively.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching or supporting undergraduate students in career readiness, experiential learning, or internship-focused programs within higher education.
  • Experience working with international students or diverse student populations in university settings.
  • Knowledge of current workforce trends, employer expectations, and career readiness competencies.
  • Experience collaborating with alumni, employers, campus partners, or student support offices such as UC San Diego Career Services or Teaching + Learning Commons.



SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Division of Extended Studies Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures.  UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.  Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
