Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) Instructor

Established by the U.S. Department of Labor, the OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) at UC San Diego was one of four original OTIECs. We offer high quality, standards-based OSHA training in California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa and the Pacific Territories. Since 1992, thousands of safety and health professionals have attended our courses and have earned our Professional Safety and Health Officer Certificate or our Safety and Health Specialist Certificate. A reasonable estimate of compensation for teaching one section of this course is $700-$2,500. The amount determined within the compensation range is dependent upon course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future sections of this course or any other courses.

Specific Duties

Qualified instructors are expected to:

• Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
• Attend OTIEC courses in order to be authorized by OSHA to teach them;
• Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the course Curriculum Manager and Lead Instructor;
• Arrive at the training site at least 30 minutes before class to prepare the room;
• Follow all UC San Diego and OTIEC procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork;
• Strictly adhere to published schedule, unless a change has been approved beforehand by OTIEC staff.

 Minimum Qualifications

• A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Master’s Degree is highly preferred.
• 10 years or more of experience in the Occupational Safety and Health Industry.
• Be proficient and utilize the most current instructional technology while providing training.

Special Conditions of Employment

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center requires up to three (3) separate demo teaching assignments prior to final approval. The UC San Diego OTIEC will contact you with scheduling options and facilitate your participation in the course(s).

Instructors must be careful not to participate in or promote training programs or consulting services which compete with similar UC San Diego OTIEC training during or after class and to adhere to the highest professional ethics.

As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by agreement". The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
