Healthcare Leadership Instructor

UC San Diego Extension’s Healthcare Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of healthcare leadership. Healthcare is undergoing a number of seismic shifts, such as the change from payment for procedure to payment for value, the adoption of Electronic Medical Records, the expanded emphasis on quality, and the increasing importance of emotional intelligence in leadership. These and other topics are vital for todays and future senior-level healthcare leaders.

UC San Diego Extension wants to expand its continuing education offerings in healthcare specifically related to skills and knowledge in healthcare leadership, management and administration. In addition, we welcome topics suggested by the applicant that may not already be available to students through our portfolio.

Specific Duties

Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in topics related to healthcare leadership. Duties include in-class or online instruction to participants who are currently working in healthcare positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to enter the field. Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners. Additional duties include:

  • Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
  • Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications would include at least ten (10) years’ experience in healthcare plus a Masters’ degree in a related field. In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience. It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of online course development and delivery. Proficiency in current instructional technology (e.g. PowerPoint) is required.

Special Conditions of Employment

As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by agreement". The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.

Application Requirements

Please send a resume and cover letter outlining your interest, background and experience related to teaching healthcare leadership topics.

Please complete all relevant fields in the application, and optionally attach additional documents to provide further information relating to your professional and teaching backgrounds. You must answer all of the questions in the application, when applicable. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of your application.

Please note: We receive and review applications for instructors on an ongoing basis. If we do not currently have teaching opportunities available, we may keep your application on file and contact you if an opportunity that matches your specific skills becomes available. UC San Diego Extension operates on a quarterly schedule and course planning typically takes place six weeks to six months in advance of the start of any quarter.

UC San Diego is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values a diverse workforce.
