Environmental Science Instructor
UC San Diego Extension’s Environmental Science Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of Environmental Science or Urban Planning. UC San Diego Extension offers a broad array of courses and certificate programs to meet the continuing education needs of the environmental science and planning communities, support high-level skills development for industry professionals and career transition for those interested in entering these fields. UC San Diego Extension wants to expand its continuing education offerings in environmental science and urban planning, specifically related to skills and knowledge in environmental law, sustainability, conservation, transportation planning, urban design, community design, site planning, environmental psychology, survey planning and design, and information technologies applied to the field. In addition, we welcome topics suggested by the applicant that may not already be available to students through our portfolio.
A reasonable estimate of compensation for teaching one section of this course is $1,300-$6,500. The amount determined within the compensation range is dependent upon course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future sections of this course or any other courses.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in environmental sciences, urban planning, or related areas of study. Specific duties include in-class or online instruction to participants who are currently working in related positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to enter the field. Instructors should be able to teach detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners, while providing a perspective on how that knowledge is applied in the industry. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.

- Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
- Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
- Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters or Ph.D. degree in an environmental sciences or planning discipline is required. In exceptional cases an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
- Highly effective interpersonal skills to engage and inspire students, and to work with others at all educational and professional levels.
- Ability to effectively convey thoughts and concepts.
- Up-to-date knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in subject area.
- Skilled in developing and revising course content.
- Proficient in learning and using online teaching tools.
