Coding Instructor
UC San Diego Extension’s Healthcare Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of Coding.  Coding is a growing field in the healthcare industry and is increasingly becoming more complicated.  The advent of ICD-10 will involve further education for numbers of healthcare professionals.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Instructors should have extensive knowledge of basic coding as well as inpatient and outpatient coding (Hospitals and physician’s offices).  Specific duties include in-class, or online, coding instruction to participants who may or may not have coding background.  Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners.  Also, instructors will be interacting with a community advisory committee related to provision of the Certificate.  Additional specific duties include:
  • Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and associated course evaluations;
  • Follow all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a hospital coder, and the CCS certification is needed to teach in the Hospital Coding Specialist Certificate Program.  A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a physician office coder and the CPC certification is required to teach in outpatient coding courses or to teach basic coding.  In both areas a masters’ degree in a field related to healthcare is preferred, although a bachelors’ degree may be considered if coupled with a number of years of experience in coding.
In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience.  It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of online course development and delivery.  Proficiency in current instructional technology (e.g. Powerpoint) is required.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures.  UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.  Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
