The University of California San Diego, Division of Extended Studies, Emergency Incident Management and Leadership in collaboration with California State Fire Training and San Diego Miramar College is seeking qualified instructors to teach courses in the Fire and Emergency Services program. These courses support the professional development and certification of fire service personnel throughout the State of California. These courses are designed to meet the needs of public safety officials and beyond, helping participants learn the latest innovative teaching strategies while fulfilling the minimum requirements to teach in the State Fire Training system.
Instructors are expected to deliver State Fire Training–approved curriculum while upholding UC San Diego’s academic standards for excellence in instruction and student engagement. This position contributes to the University’s mission of providing workforce education and advancing the professional capacity of the fire and emergency services community.
A reasonable estimate of compensation for teaching one section of this course is $650-$6,500. The amount determined within the compensation range is dependent upon course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future sections of this course or any other courses.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Qualified instructors are expected to:
- Deliver engaging classroom, hybrid, and/or practical training courses in fire and emergency services consistent with State Fire Training requirements and UCSD instructional standards.
- Teach Fire Instructor I, II, and/or other related State Fire Training-approved courses, as well as other professional development offerings.
- Prepare lesson plans, course materials, and instructional activities in alignment with official curriculum and student learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance through task book requirements, skills demonstrations, and examinations, providing timely feedback.
- Maintain accurate course records, rosters, and documentation required by UCSD and State Fire Training.
- Promote safe learning environments during classroom and field instruction.
- Participate in professional development activities to remain current with fire service practices, standards, and instructional methodologies.
- Collaborate with program leadership and fellow instructors to support continuous improvement of curriculum delivery and student outcomes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated teaching, training, or instructional experience in fire service or emergency services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A master’s degree is highly preferred and/or professional fire service experience, including supervisory and/or instructional roles in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Safety, or related field.
- Current California State Fire Training Instructor or equivalent advanced credentials.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Division of Extended Studies Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
