Summary
Title:Behavioral Sciences Instructor
ID:1039
Area of Interest:Healthcare
Description
UC San Diego Extension’s Behavioral Sciences Department seeks applicants to be instructors in the area of behavioral sciences, particularly in the fields of counseling and therapy. The Behavioral Sciences is a broad but growing field. Currently, UC San Diego Extension has programs in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling, Play Therapy, and Sand Play Therapy, among others. Our organization seeks instructors in these specific areas, but also instructors who will help expand our portfolio to other areas and modalities, such as music therapy, parent-child interaction, neonatal assessment, or genetic counseling, to name a few. We welcome suggestions by applicants who have extensive background in the field or topics which they recommend.  Further, UC San Diego Extension is seeking instructors to teach continuing education programming for those licensed individuals who need to ensure their knowledge, skills, and continuing education units are up-to-date.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in behavioral science related topics. Specific duties include in-class and online instruction to participants who are currently working in healthcare positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to enter the field. Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners.  Additional specific duties include:
  • Providing excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhancing course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Representative and Advisory Committee, and in light of course evaluations;
  • Following all procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should have at least 10 years experience in the behavioral or cognitive sciences fields and a master’s or higher degree in a related field. Instructors should also be a licensed therapist or licensed healthcare provider (LCSW, MFT, MD, PhD, RN, etc) if teaching continuing education courses to other licensed therapists or healthcare professionals. In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience. It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of online course development and delivery. Proficiency in current instructional technologies is required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement.” The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
