Play Therapy Instructor

UC San Diego Extension’s Healthcare and Behavioral Sciences Department welcomes applicants to be instructors in the area of Play Therapy. UC San Diego Extension is seeking instructors to teach continuing education programming for individuals who want to become play therapists, apply education hours to become an RPT or RPT-S through Association for Play Therapy (APT), or licensed individuals who need to ensure their knowledge, skills, and continuing education units are up-to-date.

A reasonable estimate of compensation for teaching one section of this course is $650-$3,500. The amount determined within the compensation range is dependent upon course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future sections of this course or any other courses.

Specific Duties

Instructors should have extensive knowledge and skills in Play Therapy related topics. Duties include in-class and remote/online instruction to participants who are currently working in healthcare positions and want to enhance their jobs, or who want to apply education hours to earn the RPT or RPT-S certification through APT.  Instructors should be able to teach an immense amount of detailed information in a creative and engaging manner to a large number of participants who are adult learners. Additional duties include:

  • Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques;
  • Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Department Director, Program Manager, and Advisory Committee, as well as associated course evaluations;
  • Follow all Extension policies and procedures, including the completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold the RPT-S credential through APT, and should have at least 10 years’ experience in the behavioral or cognitive sciences fields as well as a Master’s or higher degree in a related field. Instructors should also be licensed therapists or licensed healthcare providers (LCSW, MFT, MD, PhD, RN, etc.) since they will be teaching continuing education courses to other licensed therapists or healthcare professionals. In addition, applicants should have strong knowledge of adult continuing education including program design and delivery, and a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience. It is preferred that applicants have knowledge of remote/online course development and delivery. Proficiency in current instructional technologies is required.

Special Conditions of Employment

As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by agreement". The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.

Application Requirements

Please include a resume and cover letter outlining your interest, background, and experience related to teaching behavioral sciences topics.

Please complete all relevant fields in the application, and optionally attach additional documents to provide further information relating to your professional and teaching backgrounds. You must answer all of the questions in the application, when applicable. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of your application.

Please note: We receive and review applications for instructors on an ongoing basis. If we do not currently have teaching opportunities available, we may keep your application on file and contact you if an opportunity that matches your specific skills becomes available. UC San Diego Extension operates on a quarterly schedule and course planning typically takes place six weeks to six months in advance of the start of any quarter.
